Let the Games Begin

Twitch Rivals and Call of Duty World Series of Warzone is our newest in a long line of projects with Activision Blizzard. As you can guess, we cooked up a new collaboration with Activision’s Call of Duty (CoD). Our main goal was to promote season 5 of Call of Duty: Warzone, a game with over 100 million players worldwide.

To engage CoD players and fans all around the world, they invited Twitch streamers to fight it out in the first official competition for CoD: Warzone. The event was organized on two continents and included two tournaments in Europe and North America, each.

In four tournaments, five Twitch streamers acted as team captains and picked their companions for duos or trios, to win the title of the greatest of all time. Fans could follow their journey on a web we developed and designed specifically to live stream the matches. What was in it for the fans? The longer they streamed the matches, the more in-game prizes they won.

Even the prize pool was unmatched, racking up to a million dollars for the complete tournament and making it the highest prize pool yet.

Our task was to create a lasting UX/UI design and develop an easy-to-use web while working on both DevOps and quality assurance. Our big challenge was to build a page that could sustain a large number of viewers and include cool features like automatically updated tournament standings and a progression bar for in-game prizes. We wanted users to enjoy while streaming, get live tournament updates and easily win prizes.

From hosting to testing and everything in between, we did our best to make the new CoD season shine through. The result? Four million views just on the first day of the event!

Call of Duty Pick’em is an online prediction game by Activision, one of the biggest third-party video game publishers in the world.

We go way back with Activision. More precisely, we have been working together on different projects for 5 years. From GameBattles and MLG, to the Call of Duty and Overwatch Leagues, we helped them develop, design, rebrand, create, and build many of their ideas and ventures.

This time around, we designed their new project – Call of Duty League Pick’em.

Elemental Machines – using AI-powered platforms to accelerate scientific discovery.

The Elements of Elemental Machines

Elemental Machines is a Boston-based company that creates AI-powered systems, catering to science, biotech, and healthcare companies. Their IoT (Internet of things) solution is usually used in research and clinical laboratories, using sensors to collect and send information via a gateway device. This device in turn uploads data to a dashboard in the cloud.

There are many steps to the collection process, several of which not obvious or straightforward. The cloud-connected sensors are the first step. They check the temperature, light intensity, humidity, and barometric pressure every few seconds. That info is transferred to a gateway device (usually a tablet) via Bluetooth. Then, the gateway device forwards it to the clients via WiFi or cell.

The IoT ecosystem lets clients track values in different time intervals, shows errors, analyzes trends, and creates auditable reports. When a value is out of the usual margins, the system’s rules engine routes notifications to the stakeholders.

We helped Elemental Machines create and design the dashboard and application programming interface (API), optimize the transfer of collected information, design the mobile app, and work on the gateway device.

Adding Speed and Composition

We started by focusing on full-stack development and an API for their dashboard. After that, we turned our attention to the gateway device. This is where the scalability of IoT shines since the gateway device uses both Bluetooth and WiFi/cell to connect and transfer the information. We streamlined the operation of the gateway device including improving reliability and transfer speeds.

Next up we optimized the entire system! Since the sensor network can be very large, the dashboard needs to present a myriad of different types of data. So, the entire system and process as a whole has to be optimized to a tee. We aimed to create dashboards that are quick and organized. To lessen the information traffic jam, we worked on cutting down the loading time.

We managed to increase the loading speed 20 times.

Data-Driven Design

For the design portion of our work, we first worked on the dashboard Elemental Machines uses for their clients. Our designers took on the job of creating a UI design that transparently shows all the relevant data collected by the sensors. Using filters and picking sections makes visualizing and analyzing the data intuitive and efficient.

The dashboard shows all the devices in one laboratory and the details, alerts, and insights that come with them. Everything can be viewed in a multitude of formats, including interactive time-series graphs, consolidated analytics, tables, etc.

Conclusion Ex Machina

As per usual, there were some legacy issues that we addressed head-on. We inherited the dashboard and the gateway code-bases from other companies and needed to adopt them.

Secondly, when we started working with Elemental Machines, they were still in the start-up phase. We went through all the growing pains and stages throughout the years to create a great, full-fledged product together.

Working with physical hardware devices (as is the case with IoT) is always interesting and challenging, especially when you have a client as data-driven as Elemental Machines. Starving to create a good design with that much data could have been our downfall, but we have forged a very collaborative partnership with Elemental Machines that allowed both companies to grow and succeed together.

It’s been an amazing experience working with Ars Futura. They feel like an extension of our team and their team is top-notch. Once we brought Ars Futura on, things improved a lot during the early stages.

Cooking Up Ideas in the Lab

Harvard Innovation Labs is a Boston educational institution, cheering on and encouraging entrepreneurship among students, employees, and other communities within Harvard University. It’s an incubator for current and former Harvard attendees and a platform where great ideas can get access to funding and feedback. The Harvard Innovation Lab (or Harvard i-lab) works with hundreds of student startups each year. Their innovators raise billions of dollars, represent 150 countries, and work on projects in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors.

When we started cooperating with Harvard Innovation Labs, they were looking for someone to update their CRM and work as an extension of their existing team. They needed a helping hand with the legacy code in the CRM – a place where they manage teams, projects, and funding given to support innovation and ideas from some of the brightest minds in the world. This system had many unique challenges and requirements that changed from one semester to the next. So, it required a custom solution, built in Rails.

With Harvard Innovation Labs, we created a data-heavy platform that was quick and easy to use. The CRM we worked on for Harvard i-labs made chunks of data easily accessible and neatly organized.

Because the teams changed every semester, the need for new features emerged every few months and the roadmap was ever-changing to follow those needs.

You can only do so much to improve legacy code. Harvard i-lab was a sort of Frankenstein – made with a bunch of different parts, in a lab, but we made the best of it.

Gocap — where the health industry and technology come together.

Grasping the Gocap

Created in a Boston company called Common Sensing, Gocap is a smart medical device. Common Sensing works in smart healthcare, using technology to improve people's well-being. That is why they created Gocap – a device that connects to insulin pens to help regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics. It gives its users a variety of features such as tracking insulin doses, keeping a log, monitoring insulin temperature, reminders, and alerts. All this data is collected on Gocap and presented on a user’s mobile phone, via a custom app. With many more options, Gocap’s healthcare technology helps thousands of users daily.

While creating Gocap, Common Sensing’s goal was to connect with two groups – users and health technology companies. To help them do so, we built their Android and iOS app and created a software development kit (SDK). Now, we do check-ups and maintenance to make sure everything runs smoothly. We’re soon to be on Gocap version 2.0 so keep your fingers crossed! 🤞🏾

What the Doctor Ordered

Although Gocap can collect and track a lot of information, it is all unavailable to the user without a second device. This is why they needed to create something that will present the data in layman terms. Sooo, without further ado, here are the three its of the Gocap app.

Gocap collects information such as insulin amount, temperature, type, and the time it was injected. The awesome part is that it sends all that data to your phone via Bluetooth Low Energy and presents it in the app.

The app has a neat log where you can see the last time insulin was injected. It’s even sending you notifications and reminders to make sure you stay healthy. You can chart what you eat and enter glucose readings throughout the day.

Gocap makes it easier for the people in your life to be involved in your health. Send all the info to your doctor, family, or friends to help them keep you safe.

Running some tests

Common Sensing wanted to offer Gocap to other health technology companies and enable its integration to different devices and software. So, we suggested building a software development kit or SDK for short. The SDK allowed other companies to explore how Gocap would collect and deliver information when placed on their smart devices. Finally, Common Sensing could switch from only showcasing Gocap to letting their clients experience it on their own.

As we said, the data Gocap collects is sent to any device via Bluetooth. As anyone who’s worked with Bluetooth Low Energy will tell you, the technology can be tricky. Mainly because its connection tends to be a bit unstable. But, even if you manage to work around that, Bluetooths leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

Although there are many official documents helping developers work with Bluetooth, they poorly explain and even omit some important details. So, we had to dig deep around the net and explore the answers to complicated questions ourselves.

There were a few more challenges to tackle there. Establishing a good architecture for the SDK, creating the SDK MVP (lots of abbreviations, we know), and building the firmware and SDK at the same time. The last one meant exterminating a lot of bugs. Still, we made it happen. 🎉

Sense and stability

Not to brag, but we think we made two very cool and quite complex things work. Firstly, it makes us happy knowing we managed to raise Bluetooth low energy to a higher level. We made it as stable as it can be, considering it’s a shaky technology in itself.

Secondly, we managed to handle the SDK architecture well. The SDK can now be put to new use in future projects, with minimal modifications. We created something that works for the clients and users, without complicating their life. And we’re proud of that.

The developers at Ars Futura are excellent. I’d worked with them before and came back wanting to work with them again, which really speaks to the quality of their work. They’re great communicators and overall pleasant people.

Gocap

GameBattles — changing the game for online gaming tournaments.

GameBattles Tutorial

GameBattles is a gamer household name. Owned by Activision Blizzard, it is the largest cross-platform online gaming tournament system. Since 2003, it has been a place for amateur and semi-professional gamers to take part in online gaming tournaments. Here, they can form teams and clash with others in games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, Overwatch, and many more.

GameBattles creates a way for aspiring gamers to make it to the big leagues via ranking systems, Tournaments, Ladders, and Leagues. For their wins, gamers earn rewards such as points, money, online coins, or clout. They can advance from unknown to professional players and even become a part of an esports team.

Our work involved a complete turnaround - rethinking and rebranding their product, designing the entire web experience, building an Android app, and creating designs for the iOS and Android apps. In the end, GameBattles had an unrecognizable look and feel.

The Graphic Adventure

When we started collaborating, GameBattles has been in existence for years. 13 years to be exact. Their web had a bunch of features from previous projects and different stages of development. It was also badly outdated and tackling legacy code can be a pain in the... neck.

We created all the core functionalities their web now has and added some new, badly needed, features.

As a first step, we went through an exploration and discovery phase. We figured out which existing components we can improve and keep and which ones we should lose, to make the design sleek and polished. Because GameBattles wanted to retain some existing elements on their web, we reshaped the web design and created a new user interface while preserving the idea GameBattles had.

In the end, their web supported massive online competitions (think the Olympic but online and with video games), enabled account creation, detailed user profiles, and the discovery of their new service. This meant bringing in new users and having longer sessions. The user experience was simpler and better, the possibilities and ways of using the web were greater.

The Mobile Adaptation

Alongside the web, we were responsible for the UX and UI of the GameBattles mobile apps and the development of their Android app. We provided wireframes, site flows & final UI in stages of each aspect of the app.

Did you know this was the first big app we created? It’s true, we had worked on smaller apps up until that point. GameBattles was the first project on which we did vast amounts of development. This was mostly because the application had many screens. We built the whole thing from scratch. And all that in little or no time.

It was also the first time we worked with Kotlin, creating the apps with a mixture of Kotlin and Java codebase. We later implemented Kotlin into our process and now use it regularly while developing apps.

The XP We Gained

This was one of those projects that had to be done quickly and within a bunch of deadlines. Time was not on our side. We were a smaller company back then and we were low on resources. So, we worked at a different tempo and style than we usually do.

When we work on a project, we usually implement working in sprints. This means we plan, weight, distribute, and calculate how the tasks will be shared. Sprints take a lot of time so we excluded them and made a bunch of features at once. Like on a conveyor belt, we kept printing out features.

We managed to increase the number of conversions GameBattles had. Downloads and registrations on their web went up after the web redesign. Also, the mobile apps we created accounted for 50% of the overall traffic and resulted in an increase in paid conversions.

Our work was also twisted and intertwined with months and years of work done before us. It’s hard getting out of those tangles. Still, it was all worth it because the new design increased the number of downloads and registrations on their web. As far as the apps go, within a year of launching them, they accounted for 50% of the overall traffic and resulted in an increase in paid user conversion. This opened up a new audience for GameBattles, one they were unable to get before that.

Ars Futura inherited a disjointed platform and produced high-quality designs that elevated the product. They would come back each day having done more independent research and provide new ideas and new features. It was the most collaborative experience I've had to date.

Cobu - helping neighbors create communities across the United States.

Home is where Cobu is

Cobu is an American company, created with the intention to power genuine communities. The idea behind Cobu is to build a space where neighbors can exchange news, messages, ideas, or even no-longer-needed objects, get to know each other and their neighborhood, or plan get-togethers.

Property managers and retail owners can offer Cobu’s app to the people living in their housing complexes and buildings. So, they can give their tenants a chance to install Cobu, help them meet their neighbors, make friends, and stay connected with the ones around them.

Functioning as a small social network, Cobu lets you leave messages and questions, plan events and gatherings, find local businesses by using a map of the neighborhood, contact others, and create profiles to find friends in the building.

Together with Cobu, we have been trying to turn neighborhoods into communities by helping them create great design and amazing features.

Your friendly neighborhood project

Our partnership with Cobu started in 2019 when we redesigned the app’s home page and added the option to organize and browse neighborly gatherings. Armed with their style guide, we created a UX/UI design that followed both their wishes and insured an unmatched user experience.

Unlike events, gatherings were organized by and for fewer people, but ones who share the same interests - runners, dog lovers, or a book club, while events can be for the whole floor or building. Cobu hoped that these specialized get-togethers would help users bond and find common ground.

Over time, we expanded our collaboration, redesigning the group feature, adding building-wide and group discussions, and the option to create events for those groups.

The app around the corner

Development-wise, the first step we took is implementing notifications on Cobu’s app.

We built the alerts from scratch, created the notification center, designed the behavior of notification for situations when the user is inside of or not currently using the app, and implemented deep linking so notifications would navigate users directly to the comment or screen connected to a specific alert.

Afterward, we added personal profiles, discussions within groups as well as building-wide discussions, reactions, a new onboarding system, and are currently working on direct messaging.

Something to write home about

We would truly consider Cobe to be our partner in crime. They have integrated us into their project as a whole, including us into their design, marketing, and general decision making, being very open with us, and considering us a part of their team.

Together, we’re continuously working on new features. We’re planning to implement perks from local businesses for Cobu users, create a new smart feed design that will feature interesting places or ones added by other users, in the vicinity, and recommend groups or get-togethers based on the user’s previous activity.

Additionally, we’re working hard on a marketplace where Cobu users can exchange, buy or sell things they no longer need.

Finally, we’re launching a web app for property managers – an admin system where they’ll be able to see the stats, create groups and gatherings themselves, read reports, and generally manage the Cobu world around their property.

The Cobu app has an unlimited number of use cases. One of the best examples is a Texas blackout where it was used by neighbors to let each other know where the electricity is on, who has room to take someone in, who has food, and who is offering help to their next-door neighbor.

We released a brand new version of our app, and the team was critical in the process of getting it out there. Now, we rely on them as our lead engineering firepower and we plan to grow with them.

Cobu

MLG brought esports streaming to the big leagues.

Starting the Game

Major League Gaming or MLG does not need much introduction. It is to esports what Madonna is to the rest of the world – you’ve at least heard of them, even if you don’t necessarily enjoy what they do. Together with GameBattles, it’s part of Activision Blizzard, one of the biggest video game companies ever. But, in case the name managed to escape you, here is an elevator pitch. MLG organizes the best and biggest video game or esports tournaments in the US and Canada. Their most prominent project is the Call of Duty Pro League, with 331,000 live viewers following its 2020 finale.

Although we worked together for many years, we can concise our collaboration into a few projects – creating the web and mobile app design, developing mobile apps, and finally, building an Android and iOS software development kit (SDK).

Carry It With You

When we first came across MLG, they needed help designing and developing mobile apps meant to accompany their new project – MLG.tv. Made as an online video-sharing and streaming platform, MLG.tv makes it possible to stream professional esports leagues. Basically, esports teams participate in video game matches and MLG.tv users can rewatch their plays or even stream them live.

The apps are a way of increasing MLG.tv’s influence and reach, enabling users to watch pro gaming videos from MLG.tv on the go. The design we created and the code we wrote for the Android and iOS apps were custom, made from scratch. The app enables users to navigate between live events, watch content exclusive for the app, or follow original series. They wanted to create a community around esports. So, to keep the people entertained and connected, we added chat and comments. It was something like MLG’s version of Twitch but with premium curated content.

Creating the Perfect Place to Stream

A majority of our work was on the software development kit (SDK). We created the SDK for a video player made in JavaScript. Originally, we had to develop a system that supported video play inside the app, something that will enable users to watch MLG’s videos. Instead of using an external video player, we went beyond the brief and developed the SDK. The function of the SDK was to embed the video player to HTML and make sure that the video can be played cross-platform.

This made it possible not only to play MLG’s videos inside the app, but since the SDK was owned by MLG, other projects or any sister company inside Activision Blizzard was able to use it too. For example, the SDK was later used on other projects as well, specifically the Overwatch app.

So, with the help of the SDK, MLG became a platform hosting video content and any third party could use it when needed. This helped them fully transform into a media platform.

We also created a web design that helped MLG.tv launch their platform and become the place to follow esports leagues. At the end of MLG.tv’s first quarter, they had an increase in viewership of 253%.

Building for Longevity

I’m most impressed at how quickly Ars Futura is able to digest a product or idea and bring it to life. They have a talent for taking a complicated product and user flow, understanding it’s pain points, and improving things for the user and business.

Torture Prevention Village - it takes a village to create a better world

Learning by heart

When it comes to non-profit organizations making positive impacts in the world, especially in the area of torture prevention, Association for Prevention of Torture (APT) is one of those making the biggest impacts. They are constantly working for a great cause – to prevent torture or ill-treatment in societies.

From a broader perspective, there are government and non-government bodies dealing with the prevention of torture globally. They monitor institutions where one could be held against their will – prison, custody, jail, or mental health institutions. APT is one of the non-governmental organizations working with these bodies to seek solutions to prevent torture and ill-treatment as well as support national efforts to protect persons who are at risk of torture. They provide technical advice, tools, and expertise to enhance the capacities of their partners working at the national level to prevent torture and ill-treatment.

It is on this note that, in 2021, we started our joint effort on APT’s newest project ‘Torture Prevention Learning Village’ – an unconventional approach to education, for people interested in the prevention of torture, guided by its core value of continuous learning and creativity.

Torture Prevention Learning Village is a website and digital learning platform where anyone interested in the subject can build technical capacity to identify and prevent torture.

Leaving no stone unturned

APT approached us with an ambitious idea. They imagined a campus for both laymen and experts in the field of ill-treatment/torture prevention. Something that will appeal to anyone interested in the subject but be specific enough for people who already work on the prevention of ill-treatment and torture. So, our first step was a discovery phase. Together, we went through several workshops and outlined which features to include in the minimum valuable product (MVP).

The Torture Prevention Learning Village was an ideal solution. It was a leaping point and the first step towards a complete learning management system. We worked on product planning, to decide which initial features will make the Village a comprehensive and intuitive platform.

Their idea only grew from then on. While the Village was open to all, APT wanted to specifically educate those who already work on the prevention of torture. Their next feature was curated towards people in the same field as them.

This is why we created courses for experts.

As a part of those courses, new partner users are onboarded via an invite sent out to interested organizations and their employees. They go through an in-depth course that includes structured lectures and modules with tests, online meetings, and workshops. Depending on their results during the modules, they earn certificates issued by the APT team.

In the near future, the APT team wants to create a virtual community with a space where members of the community can network with others interested in the cause of torture prevention, exchange ideas, share experiences, ask questions and collaborate.

Passing with flying colors

Our work on the Torture Prevention Village was a full-service venture. The Village runs on a custom-developed web that we fully designed and manage content for. The center of the Village is the Campus, dedicated to educating anyone willing to learn.

To create the Campus, we connected Articulate Rise to a homemade and custom-built learning management system and now collect useful information – how much time users spend on the Campus, how successful they are at completing courses, and so on. This helped APT gain around new 200 users in their pilot stages.

Articulate Rise 360 is a web application that makes it possible to create courses in a short amount of time. Because of the technologies that Rise 360 uses, the courses built are fully responsive and adapt to any device.

And this is just the beginning. APT plans to expand their home even more and welcome new learners.

MITURF is a Toronto-based startup, aiming to connect people who enjoy an active lifestyle with sporting venues.

HOW THE BALL GOT IN OUR COURT

MITURF was built as a one-stop-shop for booking sporting venues. The idea for this web and app sprouted when its owners realized how hard it can be to organize both jocks and venues. Enter MITURF! Users discover, inquire about and book recreational spaces. Venues keep track of those inquiries and bookings through their dashboards. Kind of like the Airbnb of sporting spaces but without the seaside views, unfortunately.

After starting Ars Futura and getting our feet wet, MITURF was one of our first more complex projects. Tasked with everything from product design and development to custom development of the entire platform, we had our work cut out. But, we hit the ground running.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The provider area is made for venue owners and their employees. We wanted to make sure going through messages and adjusting profiles is easy peasy lemon squeezy, to help them be more productive. They can access the app from different devices, review inquiries and bookings, keep track of the space occupancy and payments. Venues can spice up their profiles by setting terms, hours and rules, adding photos, and determining the type of activities they allow.

MITURF makes sure they can rest easy. Users are verified, the payment is collected immediately and made available to the venue after the customer completes their booking. From our standpoint, this meant adding custom payment methods as well as working and reservation hours for every platform.

MVP IS NOT Maximum Viable Product

A minimum viable product (MVP) is a product with just enough features to satisfy early customers and to provide feedback for future development. Deciding which features to cut from your MVP and which ones to keep is never easy.

MITURF launched after two years in development with a feature-packed website, provider administration portal, an internal administration dashboard, and an iOS app. We probably didn’t need all of those. As they say, hindsight is 20-20.

I think we could have launched sooner. With MITURF, we learned a lot of valuable lessons on gathering feedback and prioritizing common user needs. We realized that “If it had just one feature before the launch, people would love it more” is not something that is true for most products.

With MITURF, we quickly grasped that while building a complex product with a lot of moving parts — things change. And they change often. A feature might go through a few rounds of design, development and user testing before actually settling down into what the customers might see.

We redesigned the profile pages on MITURF a few times. Rewrote the Smart Calendar twice. Don’t even get us started on the homepage. What we learned was that coming back and taking another stab at something you thought was good — can make that thing great ✨.

Ars Futura blew me away by understanding what the core problems we were trying to address were. You can really put your trust in their knowledge and expertise. The team went above and beyond their contract.
